Life Insurance · Protecting What You've Built

Most Folks Put Off Life Insurance for Two Reasons. They Think It Costs More Than It Does, and They Don't Know Where to Start.

Both of those are fixable in one honest conversation. No pitch, no pressure, just a clear look at what fits your situation.

Folks rarely call me about life insurance first. They come in for something else, and at some point they mention a spouse. A mortgage. Kids they are still helping out. Or a parent whose final expenses are going to land on somebody.

Here is what I have learned in 25 years. Most folks have never done the math on what the people they love would actually be dealing with. And when they do, even a rough version of it, this stops being a sales pitch and becomes a practical decision.

We help folks look at it objectively. What you are protecting, what it would really cost, and which kind of policy does that job. Then you decide.

Couple thinking through what their family would face without one income

The Question

If Something Happened to You Tomorrow

Nobody likes to sit with that question. It is easier to put off. But the people who depend on you do not get to put off the consequences.

A surviving spouse still has the mortgage. The kids still have years of expenses ahead. And if you are the one helping an aging parent, their final expenses do not wait either. The income or the savings that would have covered it is suddenly gone, at the worst possible moment.

Life insurance is not about death. It is about making sure the people you love are not left choosing between grief and a stack of bills. That is the whole idea, and it is a practical decision more than an emotional one.

The Cost Myth

You Probably Think This Costs More Than It Does

This is the single biggest reason folks wait. According to the 2025 Insurance Barometer Study from LIMRA and Life Happens, most adults overestimate what life insurance costs, and younger adults overestimate the price of a basic term policy by as much as ten to twelve times.

What it actually costs comes down to your age, your health, the type of policy, and how much coverage you need. There is no flat answer, and anybody who quotes you one before they know those things is guessing.

The only honest way to find your number is to look at it. That costs you nothing. The carriers pay us, not you. And for most folks, that is the moment they stop putting this off.

Two Types of Life Insurance We Help Folks With

There is no single right answer. The right type depends on what you are protecting, who depends on you, and how long that need lasts. Here are the two we help most folks with.

Term Life Insurance

Covers you for a set period, typically 10, 20, or 30 years, and pays a death benefit to your beneficiaries if you pass away during that term. It is the most straightforward way to protect your income, your mortgage, and the people who depend on you, and for a set number of years it gives you the most coverage per dollar of any type of life insurance.

Best for: folks with a spouse or dependents relying on their income, families with a mortgage, business owners who need key-person protection.

Final Expense Insurance

A smaller whole life policy, sometimes called burial insurance, designed to cover what happens after you are gone: funeral costs, outstanding medical bills, small debts. It does not expire, the premium does not increase once it is set, and it is available to most folks up to age 85, including many who have been declined for traditional life insurance.

Best for: adults 50 to 85 who want to make sure their family is not left with end-of-life expenses, and folks rounding out coverage they already have.

All life insurance products are subject to underwriting approval. Premiums vary based on age, health status, coverage amount, and other factors. Any sample rates are illustrative only and not guaranteed. Final expense and other simplified or guaranteed issue policies may include a graded death benefit during the first policy years. Guarantees are subject to the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Not all products available in all states. Guaranteed-issue final expense: This policy contains a 2-year waiting period. If the insured dies from natural causes within the first 2 years of the policy, the death benefit will not be paid. The insurance company will return all premiums paid. Accidental death is covered from day one.

Buying for a Parent

If You Are Doing This for a Parent, You Are in the Right Place

This is one of the most common calls we get, and one almost nobody talks to directly. An adult child, trying to make sure a parent's funeral does not become the family's problem, not sure where to even start.

The bill is real and it arrives fast. A funeral with viewing and burial runs about $8,300 (NFDA, 2023 data), and once you add the cemetery, a full traditional burial commonly runs $11,000 to $16,000. Cremation with a service is around $6,300. When there is no policy, that usually comes out of the family's savings, often before any other money is available.

A small final expense policy decides who pays that bill ahead of time. If that is the conversation you are here for, start with our final expense guide, then let us help you figure out the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is whole life a scam?+

You may have heard that it is. I will agree with the critics on one point, then tell you where they go wrong. As a way to grow your money, whole life is usually a poor choice, and the loud voices online are not wrong about that. But final expense is not a way to grow money, and it was never meant to be. It is a tool for one job: covering the funeral and the small bills at the end, so your family does not. Judge it by that job, not as a place to build wealth.

Am I too old to get life insurance?+

Most folks are surprised by what is available. Term life is generally available through age 75 to 80. Final expense insurance is available to most applicants up to age 85.

My parent has health problems. Can they still get covered?+

Often yes. Different carriers underwrite health conditions differently, and final expense policies in particular use simplified underwriting built for people who have been declined elsewhere. We cannot promise approval, but we can find the carrier most likely to say yes.

What does "no medical exam, no waiting period" actually mean?+

Be careful here. Some no-exam policies are fully underwritten with health questions. Guaranteed-issue policies ask no health questions but carry a 2-year waiting period, meaning death from natural causes in the first two years returns your premiums rather than paying the full benefit. We will tell you which kind you are looking at and whether you qualify for better.

How much coverage do I actually need?+

It depends on what you are protecting. We help you think through income, debts, dependents, and final expenses, and arrive at a number that makes sense. These needs overlap, so you do not simply add them all up.

Is working with an independent broker more expensive?+

No. Your premium is the same whether you go through us or directly to the carrier. The carriers pay us, never you.

What happens if I outlive my term policy?+

Your coverage ends. Many folks convert to a permanent policy or buy a new term before the old one expires. Many term policies include a conversion option that does not require new medical underwriting.
